Music to My Ears!
What a crazy couple of weeks it has been! After Hurricane Wilma knocked out power in the majority of south Florida, I did what any supportive wife would do... I got the heck out! Since we were heading down to St. Pete the following weekend anyway, I went a bit early. One day with a baby and no power was quite enough for me. Poor Kevin had to stay and work, but was able to join us for a long weekend. I've lived in Florida since I was 10 and have experienced a few minor hurricanes along the way but I was totally unprepared for this. What we expected to be a category one, turned into a storm that brought 155 mph wind gusts that knocked out windows in buildings throughout downtown and even blew cars into each other in our parking lot. We live on the 11th floor in a condo building and as Kevin and I were laying in bed listening to the storm pick up, we could feel the building sway and watch the windows shake. Obviously by that time it was too late to go anywhere, but I knew we made a mistake in staying. And what was sweet Aubrey doing as her mother went into hysterics? Sleeping through her third hurricane! She has become quite the pro and is probbaly destined to have a career as a Hurricane Hunter. When we arrived home from our trip, things were almost back to normal in our building except for one crucial detail... we had no air conditioning. And we wouldn't be getting it back for 6-8 weeks! Ahywhere else in the country, this wouldn't be such a big problem, but in Miami the temperature during the day is still 88 degrees. We made it about 24 hours before I thought I would totally lose my mind. Luckily, we were able to get two portable AC units. With our fans blowing, it's a bit Sanford and Son, but life is good again!
Kevin has mentioned in the past about how Aubrey has really taken to the pacifier, much to our dismay. Well, now she has learned something else that I was seriously hoping we wouldn't have to deal with... thumb sucking! She has been trying to find it since the day she was born and this week she was successful (depending how you look at it). Pacifiers can be taken away, but how exactly do you take away part of their hands? Kevin has suggested soaking her thumbs in hot sauce, but somehow I think that would be frowned upon by DCFS. As much as I dread having to break the thumb sucking habit somewhere down the road (hopefully before she gets her driver's license), it does have its benefits. She is able to put herself back to sleep during naptime. Just when I think her whopping thirty-minuite nap is finished, I hear my little Maggie Simpson through the monitor... it has become music to my ears!
Hello Keena, Kevin and Aubrey. First of all, congratulations! It's good to see you're all doing well. Aubrey is beautiful.
I just thought I'd stop by and say "Hi". It looks like you're really busy (and tired) these days, but I'm sure every minute is worth it.
Take care, and keep blogging your adventures in parenting (and hurricanes!).
